If you are involved in a car crash, you may be wondering what to do next. There are 6 important things you should do:
1.GET MEDICAL HELP IF THERE ARE INJURIES
First and foremost, if you, or anyone, were injured in the accident you should dial 911 to seek medical assistance at the accident scene. Even if you feel okay at the accident scene you should schedule a visit with your doctor as soon as you can after the accident to get checked out. Sometimes injuries don't immediately appear obvious.
2.CALL THE POLICE AND REMAIN AT THE ACCIDENT SCENE
The police should be called in any accident involving personal injury or property damage. When the police arrive, you can give them your version of how the accident happened. It is important that you exchange information with the other driver or drivers who were also involved in the accident. The information exchanged should be your driver's license, insurance information and registration. You can use your cell phone camera to take a photo of the other driver's documents.
3.GATHER EVIDENCE
While still at the accident scene with the cars that were involved in the accident still present, it is helpful to your case if you are able to take photographs of the vehicles involved showing the damage to each vehicle. Please be sure to take photos which show the license plate for each vehicle. If the vehicles have not been moved, take photos of the position of the vehicles after the accident. Take photos of the accident location.
4.NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY
It is important that you notify your insurance company as soon as possible to protect your rights under your insurance policy. Most insurance policies require that the accident be reported as soon as practical after the accident.
5.FILE AN ACCIDENT REPORT
Unless there was only minor property damage, $1,000 or less, you are required by law to file form MV-104, Report of Motor Vehicle Accident, with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. You could find this form online at the DMV website.
